We’ve never faced a time when it’s actually encouraged to spend our days agonizing over whether or not to take another nap or to eat another dozen cookies (and to think—doing either of these things actually helps the situation)! So, why not do your part by staying home and indulging in some light-hearted weed flicks? To get you started, we’ve come up with a list of our favorite cannabis-themed movies of all time.
If you haven’t seen this Ice Cube-written dramedy from the 90s, are you even a cannabis fan?
Plot: “Two homies, Smokey and Craig, smoke a dope dealer’s weed and try to figure a way to get the $200 they owe to the dealer by 10 p.m. that same night.”
How High (2001)
Really high is the answer to this title.
Plot: “Two guys by the name of Silas and Jamal decided to one day smoke something magical, which eventually helps them to ace their college entrance exam.”
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Is there anyone on Earth who doesn’t identify with Jeff Bridges’ weed-smoking, White Russian-drinking “Dude”?
Plot: “Jeff ‘The Dude’ Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.”
Half Baked (1998)
One of Dave Chappelle’s finest on-screen appearances.
Plot: “The story of three not-so-bright men who come up with a series of crazy schemes to get a friend out of jail.”
Pineapple Express (2008)
Yeah, we know Seth Rogen movies are basically all centered around cannabis, but this is definitely one of the highlights of his career.
Plot: “A process server and his marijuana dealer wind up on the run from hitmen and a corrupt police officer after he witnesses his dealer’s boss murder a competitor while trying to serve papers on him.”
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
It’s as ridiculous as it sounds. But if you’re in the mood to zone-out, this movie is the perfect choice.
Plot: “A Korean-American office worker and his Indian-American stoner friend embark on a quest to satisfy their desire for White Castle burgers.”
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Didn’t Keanu win an Oscar for this one?
Plot: “Two seemingly dumb teens set off on a quest to prepare the ultimate historical presentation with the help of a time machine.”
Billy Madison (1995)
Despite Billy (Adam Sandler) not actually enjoying cannabis on camera, it’s obvious this plot was written under the influence of something, and intended for viewers who’d also indulged. Any doubt you may have will disappear once you see Chris Farley running through a meadow with a giant penguin.
Plot: “In order to inherit his fed up father’s hotel empire, an immature and lazy man must repeat grades 1-12 all over again.”
Reefer Madness (1936)
This film is both hilariously out-of-touch (even for its time), and highly recommended by basically anyone with an interest in cannabis history. Our gift to you: click below to watch the full movie on YouTube! Give it a go, and celebrate how far the cannabis community has come!
Plot: “Cautionary tale featuring a fictionalized take on the use of marijuana. A trio of drug dealers lead innocent teenagers to become addicted to “reefer” cigarettes by holding wild parties with jazz music.”
Up in Smoke (1978)
This is the cannabis classic to end all cannabis classics! If you’re going to pick just one on this list, make sure it’s this one!
Plot: “Two stoners unknowingly smuggle a van—made entirely of marijuana—from Mexico to L.A., with incompetent Sgt. Stedenko on their trail.”
We hope we’ve given you some chill choices to indulge in during your down-time in isolation. And remember: stay home, and stay safe during this period of time!
